No way. If it wasn't for people on message boards like this, then there's no doubt that I wouldn't have found out about most of the stuff I listen to today. Yeah, you've got to put a bit of effort into it yourself and not just wait for people to say "listen to this", but without recommendation (whether it be through the internet, or your mates talking) I bet no one on this board would have found out about at least one thing they listen to.

Set Your Goals will be huge once they release their album on Eulogy in the summer. This Is Hell's Trustkill album will probably be massive. Have Heart's EP on B9 will do well too. It's going to be a good year.
